However, what goes up must also come down!

Having a little fun on my last day off with a little side project. The simulation ran on my GPU and is output every time step (0.5s), 25m grid spacing.

A blustery morning at Ballynahinch Castle!

We were just walking by on the way back to the hotel and decided to pop in. Absolutely worth it.

I’m biased, but I also think this is hands down the best mobile experience for radar tilt selection of any app out there, full stop. Everyone else treats browsing multiple tilts as a second-class citizen. You don’t have to go through a sea of menus to interrogate a storm.

Especially hard work went into performance. Handling multi-site level II radar 1) performantly and 2) intuitively was a difficult task. Adding the dynamic range gating was no small feat for desktop and mobile. Figuring out how it should behave with MRMS took some effort.

Sometimes you just have to draw a line in the sand and say something is ready. I've spent the last month or so not only adding level II site functionality to Heimdall, but what I consider to be genuinely novel functionality and interactivity. It's live for you to try at heimdall.stormscale.io

A substantial amount of work has gone into making this possible and at least somewhat intuitive on mobile, too. Multi-site level 2 with MRMS and split-pane pushes the browser to its limits. A resourcing model will reduce your loop size in order to fit your site + pane config.

Archive mode is fully supported. The compositing logic is such that you can blend MRMS with level 2, but also overlay MRMS on top of level 2. On the left display, MRMS reflectivity is an underlay masked by the range gate. On the right, semi-transparent rotation tracks are on top of velocity.

I've been fairly quiet on the Heimdall front, but that's because I've been working on some massive updates behind the scenes. Still rough edges to smooth over, interactivity behaviors to flesh out, and some bugs to squash, but... - single-site level 2 radar - multi-site level 2 radar - compositing

One thing I miss about the early internet is whimsy. Everything has become sterile & boring with corporatization. I also miss screensavers... as a kid I used to scour the internet for cool screensavers. This little addition of whimsy to my home page is an homage to those things :) stormscale.io
