unfortunately, not just a trait of the Irish, but most men who grew up in the 60s & 70s.
women were not considered people, then— unable to own property or credit, unable to initiate divorce, marital rape was considered a duty, and the only semblance of freedom from your parents was to marry an abusive man, procreate, and hope he doesn’t kill you. shit only changed in the last 40 years.
